Laura Roberts was born in Nottingham (Robin Hood Country) before moving to Liverpool to gain a BA Hons in English and Communication Studies from the University of Liverpool. Now a fully-fledged South West Londoner, I live in leafy Wandsworth with my husband, young daughter and fur child, Maggie. My desire to make children’s books started young with my own wonderful experience of learning to read, thanks to my mum. The Jolly Postman by Allan and Janet Ahlberg is my long-standing inspiration and a personal benchmark for what makes a great picture book. And I am an Alice in Wonderland super-fan, so much so that my husband and I themed our wedding around it!
Emily Bornoff and I worked together at Macmillan Children’s Books, collaborating with acclaimed authors and illustrators and nurturing new talent. I cried a river when she left, so I didn’t let her go again when we became freelance! Emily is an incredible designer with a brilliant knowledge of children’s publishing and an instinctive flair for creating audience-pleasing, market-focussed books. As a published illustrator herself, Emily knows how to get the best out of someone’s work by putting herself in their shoes. Friendship is at the heart of our working relationship, so you’ll get a connected and collaborative experience with us.
Maggie is always on-hand to support, providing there are treats available and plenty of opportunities to nap. She has lots of opinions and makes them known. But she is yet to master the art of making coffee. The peak of her publishing career to date was a cameo role with her very own cake shop in Cake by picture book superstars Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet.
